The Arrival of the Anthropocene Age

Related to climate change and control was recognition of the arrival of the Anthropocene Age. During the time when we struggled with climate change problems, an idea germinated that has had a profound effect on our perception of our interactions with our earthly environment and subsequently in our approach to the colonization of other bodies. Early in the third millennium the idea was put forward that the Earth had entered a new geological age: the Anthropocene . This age is defined by the fact that we humans have acquired enough energy and technology to control the whole of our ecosystem and some of our geology.

We now accept this as fact, and CGA policies must take this fact into account to avoid damaging changes and promote beneficial ones. It took a while for the implications of this understanding to sink in, but it is now the basis of our policies in dealing with human habitats. We can and do shape our surroundings in the way we want, by using energy sources and technology. In due course, after we had this power in some measure, we also acquired the wisdom to optimize our dealings with our surroundings and to protect all that we cherish, but without being afraid to act for the good of our ultimate goals. The atmospheric titrators mentioned above are an example of our mastery of the environment. The flora and fauna of the Mars colony is an even more startling example of how we can create a world for ourselves. I will tell you more about this later.
